Mikuni Minato, one of Japan’s most prosperous trading ports for Kitamae-bune, has been in existence for over 1,000 years. In this tour, you will spend a day in Mikuni Minato as a person or family member related to Kitamae-bune, a prosperous and emotional town since the Edo period.

Stories passed down from the Kitamae Ship.

Mikuni Minato has a history of more than 1,000 years as a center of trade on the Sea of Japan. From the Edo period (1603-1867) to the Meiji period (1868-1912), it flourished as a port of call for Kitamae-bune, and many merchants and sailors came and went. Remnants of this history and culture can still be seen in the townscape and festivals. In this tour, you will visit Mikuni Minato from various angles, which is colored by the history and culture of the Kitamae-bune. Please come to Mikuni Minato for a trip to the Kitamae Ship culture. A special experience awaits you in this port town steeped in history and tradition.

Plan Details

Ride on a cruise ship and view the town of Mikuni Minato and the view from Tojinbo from the sea. Tour the Mikuni Festival float warehouse and see the inside of historical buildings such as the former Kishinae family stand side by side. In the town, you can enjoy tea, Japanese sweets, shamisen appreciation, bonsai making, lantern making, and more. At Mikuni Shrine, a “special prayer” will be held in an area normally closed to the public. From November onward, visitors can also taste Echizen crab in season.

Mikuni Minato/Kitamae Stream and Local Exchange Type Special Tour

Board a cruise ship and see Mikuni Minato from the sea – a tour around the town, and enjoy the “Kitamae Stream” held once a year at the same time. Mobility guided tour of the Mikuni Festival floats and the town. (Using iino, a mobility vehicle with voice guidance in multiple languages) At Mikuni Shrine, you will enjoy a special prayer service with gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) and Shinto rituals, a hearty special dinner, and overnight stay at a machiya (traditional townhouse) hotel. Early morning walk in Tojinbo is also available.

Mikuni Minato Community Exchange Special Tour

Take a sightseeing boat from Tojinbo and view the cliffs and the magnificent Sea of Japan from the sea – Stroll around Mikuni Minato Town – Visit the Mikuni Festival float warehouse (guided and audio guided tour), buildings of historical value such as the former Kishinae family, experience Japanese culture (Japanese sweets, shamisen, bonsai, lanterns, etc.) Shinto ritual, gagaku music and dance, “Mikuni-bushi” at the Mikuni Shrine. For dinner, enjoy Echizen crab dishes, etc., and return to Machiya Hotel. In the early morning, you can go for a walk or bike tour around the area (Tojinbo, Ojima Island, etc.).

Tour of Mikuni Festival warehouses (guided tour) Walking the streets of buildings of historical value such as the former Kishina Family. At Mikuni Shrine, you can experience Shinto rituals, gagaku (ancient Japanese court music and dance), and Mikuni-bushi (traditional Japanese folk song). For dinner, you can also taste seasonal Echizen crab.
